“I had the strangest, uncontrollable urge to attend Bingo”

Dorothy Lemme

Being in a military family is extremely difficult when you are transferred overseas and are forced to leave a pet behind. This was the case for my family in 1979. My husband, David, was in the Air Force, and we were transferred to Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, Japan, for three years. We had to leave our dog, Dasher, behind with relatives in the United States.

The kids, thirteen-year-old Shari and three-year-old Scott, looked at the move as an adventure and made the transition beautifully. We all adjusted in our own ways, but there was one thing missing: our dog. So we sat down and made a family decision. We would adopt a dog from Japan.

Shortly thereafter, David came home from work one night with an eleven-month-old golden-colored mixed-breed girl he’d found at a local kennel. We named her Penny, and she seemed to understand right away that she was a member of the family. But David was quick to point out that when it came time for us to leave, we would have to leave Penny behind. David was a strong military man who ran the house. What he said was the rule of the family. It was very upsetting when he reminded us that Penny would be left. And he reminded us over and over again. I think it was his way of telling us not to get attached.

Penny had a very happy face and a fluffy tail. If her tail wasn’t wagging, she placed it over her back, and we called it her umbrella. She was sweet, loving, and devoted. She had a funny way of saying “please” by doing what we called “the pose.” When she wanted something, she’d sit on her back legs, lift her front legs off the ground, and drop her paws, all the while sitting up straight. We loved everything about Penny.
